Body-Cam Footage of Gun Battle at Ralph’s Grocery Store That Left San Diego Sergeant Shot in the Head Goes Viral
The San Diego Police Department has released the body camera video of a deadly shootout that occurred at a Ralph’s Grocery store on December 7th, 2023. The footage shows the tense moments when officers chased and exchanged fire with an armed suspect, who was later identified as Curtis Harris, 46.
Why was Curtis Harris Wanted by San Diego Police?
According to police, Harris was wanted for stealing a car and had an unserved protective order in connection with a domestic violence case. He was spotted by officers near the grocery store and fled inside, where he ran through the aisles with a handgun, causing panic among the shoppers and employees.
How the Ralph’s Grocery Store Shooting Began with a Sergeant Shot in the Head
The body camera footage captures the officers’ attempts to locate and apprehend Harris, who repeatedly ignored their commands to surrender. At one point, Harris exits the store and opens fire at the officers, who return fire and fatally wound him.
During the gun battle, Sergeant Anthony Elliot, a 15-year veteran of the department, was shot in the head at close range near the shopping cart area of the store.
He was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent surgery and remained in critical condition. He survived the shooting, but details about his current condition are still vague.

Chief David Nisleit praised his officers for their bravery and professionalism in the face of a dangerous situation. He also expressed his gratitude to the community for their support and prayers for Sergeant Elliot and his family.
In this case it was clear the cops acted in self-defense, and in accordance with their training and policies. The body camera footage clearly showed the suspect pulling out his weapon, and shooting a cop before they opened fire on him.
Can imagine shopping at Ralph’s Grocery store and getting caught in the middle of a gun battle? I would probably never go shopping again.
