Luka Doncic is not known as a fighter, but he is known to be one of the toughest players in the league. He has never backed down from anyone, and plays skilled bully ball on offense very often. He’s also shown flashes of being a great trash talker in terms of his wittiness. However, after a heated moment during Mavericks’ latest game against the Utah Jazz, some people are looking at Luka bit differently in terms of his toughness, but are they overreacting?
Did Kris Dunn Punk Out Luka Doncic?
Up to the point of the incident, the NBA game between the Utah Jazz and the Dallas Mavericks was not a close one. The Mavericks dominated for most the game, leading by as much as 26 points in the third quarter. However, the game was not without drama, as an altercation between Jazz guard Kris Dunn and Mavericks star Luka Doncic would ensue, making things a bit more exciting.
The fight happened with around 3 minutes left in the third quarter, when the Mavericks were leading 93-67. Doncic drove to the basket, and missed a layup while being defended by Dunn. It seemed that Doncic may have inadvertently hit Dunn in the face lightly while in the process of attempting the layup.
The two came face to face and then Dunn put his finger in Doncic’s face while saying some things that did not seem friendly. Doncic just stood there silent slightly backing away. It looked a lot like how Chris Paul put his finger in Rajon Rondo’s face a few years ago. luka was smiling after the incident as referees were debating who should get a technical foul.
Both Dunn and Doncic were assessed technical fouls for the confrontation, which shocked some people, because during the altercation Doncic was literally just standing still not saying anything. The fact that Luka Doncic let Kris Dunn put his finger his face and did not do anything, is why some people on social media are saying he punked out. They believe Luka Doncic was laughing after, because he was nervous.
When CP3 put his finger in Rajon Rondo’s face, he proceeded to punch Chris Paul in the face. A finger to the face is one of the most disrespectful things you can do a person in terms of belittling them.
However, some fans argued that Doncic showed restraint and maturity by not reacting to Dunn’s provocation, while others claimed that Doncic was intimidated and disrespected by Dunn’s gesture. Some also pointed out that Doncic had no reason to be angry, as his team was dominating them. Plus he just recently became a new dad, so he’s probably not trying to fight anybody right now.
It might be a bit of stretch to say Kris Dunn punked out Luka Doncic with the finger point to his face, but who knows maybe he was really scared in that moment, and froze up when he wanted say something back.
