In a chaotic scene protesters shot fireworks and glass bottles at Police Officers defending the Columbus Statue in Grant Park. The bronze statue was installed in Chicago’s Grant Park in 1933. It was sculpted by a Milanese artist named Carlo Brioschi. When protesters started launching fireworks at the police, it was the boiling of an intense battle to keep the statue standing.
That statue was already being protected with a special cover that makes it much harder topple over. However, due to the sheer number of protesters police intervention was inevitable.
You never want to see any clash between protesters and police get to a point where projectiles like fireworks and glass bottles are being used. That usually ends up bad for everyone involved. Hopefully no one got hurt on either side.
