Why is ‘Beezin’ Dangerous? The Science Behind TikTokers are Using Lip Balm to Get ‘High’

If you are active on TikTok, you may have come across a new trend called “beezin”. This involves applying Burt’s Bees lip balm, usually the peppermint flavor, to your eyelids. Some TikTokers claim that this gives them a buzz, enhances their alcohol or drug effects, or makes them more alert. However, before you try this at home, you should know that beezin is not only ineffective, but also potentially dangerous for your eyes.

How Does ‘Beezin’ Work According to TikTokers?

Beezin is not a new phenomenon. It first emerged in 2014, when some teenagers and college students started experimenting with lip balm on their eyelids. The trend resurfaced in late 2022 and early 2023 on TikTok, where videos of people beezin have amassed millions of views and likes. Some of the videos show people reacting to the tingling sensation, while others show people dancing or partying after beezin.

But what exactly is beezin and why do people do it? According to some TikTokers, beezin gives them a mild high or a feeling of euphoria. They say that the peppermint oil or menthol in the lip balm stimulates the nerves on the eyelids and creates a cooling effect. Some also believe that beezin can intensify the effects of alcohol or drugs, or help them stay awake for longer periods of time.

Why is Beezin Dangerous? The Science Behind It

Doctors and eye experts have warned that beezin does not get you high or alter your brain chemistry in any way. The only thing it does is irritate your eyelids and possibly your eyes, which can lead to serious complications.

According to Dr. Olivia J. Killeen, a clinical lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Michigan Medicine, beezin can cause chemical irritation to the eyelids themselves, resulting in redness, swelling, and inflammation. She also notes that it’s easy for products to accidentally get into the eyes themselves. So, beezin can end up causing tearing, redness, and painful burns to the surface of the eyes. In severe instances, it could lead to scarring or vision loss.

Beezin can also increase the risk of infection, especially if the lip balm is applied to the eyelids after it was already used on the lips. Killeen says in some cases, viruses or bacteria from the lips could cause conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye. On a more serious level, it may cause infections and ulcers of the eye that can be difficult to treat and lead to permanent vision loss.

What to Do if You are Suffering Complications from Beezin?

Anyone who tries beezin and notices any of these symptoms should see an eye doctor immediately. Killeen says these issues can occasionally be resolved just by stopping the practice, but some may require additional treatment. That could involve artificial tears or other medications including steroids, antibiotics or antihistamines.

However, the best advice is to avoid beezin altogether. There are safer and more effective ways to get high, have fun, or stay alert without risking your eyesight. Products that are not designed for your eyes should not be used in or around your eyes. Eyes and vision are precious, and both the eyeballs and the eyelids are very sensitive. Any trend like this is generally a bad idea.

So next time you see a video of someone beezin on TikTok, don’t be tempted to join them. Instead, report the video for promoting harmful behavior and educate yourself and others about the dangers of beezin. Your eyes will thank you.
