What is 3-MMC Made Of and is It Legal?
The drug is a synthetic stimulant that belongs to the cathinone family, a group of substances derived from the khat plant. 3-MMC is closely related to mephedrone, a popular drug that was banned in many countries in the early 2010s. However, 3-MMC remains legal in some places, such as the Netherlands, where it can be bought online or in smart shops.
3-MMC became popular over the past two years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people were looking for ways to cope with boredom, stress and isolation. Some users claim that 3-MMC provides a euphoric, sociable and stimulating high, similar to MDMA or cocaine, but without the unpleasant after-effects.
Why is 3-MMC Dangerous if It Has No Comedown?
Experts warn that 3-MMC is not a harmless substance, and that it can have serious health risks. According to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), 3-MMC can cause adverse effects such as tachycardia, agitation, hallucinations, sweating, seizures and hyperthermia.
It can also induce psychological problems such as insomnia, anxiety and psychosis. Moreover, 3-MMC has a strong potential for addiction, as it triggers the release of dopamine in the brain, creating a cycle of craving and bingeing. Some users report using large amounts of 3-MMC in a short period of time, which can increase the risk of overdose and death.
Considering the risks, the smart choice would be for people should avoid using 3-MMC, due to the potential harm it can cause physically and mentally. The fact that 3-MMC has no comedown does not mean that it has no consequences.
Although it might be marketed as such in some places, it is not a safe alternative to other stimulants. It can be just as dangerous.
