A shocking video of a man who set himself on fire at the University of California at Berkeley campus has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage and disbelief among viewers.
Why Did a Student Throw a Bike at a Man Burning on Fire at University of California, Berkeley Campus?
The video, which was reportedly first recorded by a man who took his son on a recruitment visit for UC Berkeley football, shows a man completely engulfed in flames walking at Sproul Plaza as bystanders rush to put out the fire. One of them throws a metal bike at the burning man, apparently thinking that it would help extinguish the flames. However, the bike only bounces off the man’s body and lands on the ground.
The video has been viewed millions of times on various social media platforms, and has generated thousands of comments from people who are shocked that someone was stupid enough to think throwing a metal bike at someone on fire would help the situation.
Some of the comments include: “Who throws a bike at someone on fire? That’s like throwing gasoline on them”, “That’s not how you put out a fire. That’s how you make it worse”, “What kind of idiot does that? He could have killed him or injured himself”, “That’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen. How did he even come up with that idea?”.
Was the Man Burning on Fire at UC Berkeley Trying to Commit Suicide?
Some reports allege that the man who set himself on fire was allegedly suffering from a mental health crisis, and had doused himself with gasoline before lighting himself up. He allegedly suffered second and third-degree burns over most of his body, and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, and prompted an evacuation of nearby buildings.
UC Berkeley officials said they were investigating the incident, and providing support to students and staff who witnessed it. They also urged anyone who needs mental health assistance to contact their counseling services.
Some have suggested that more resources and training should be provided to prevent such tragedies from happening again. Others have expressed sympathy for the man who allegedly set himself on fire, and hoped that he would recover from his injuries.
