According to a new report from the Erie County Coroner’s office, the death of Emily Matson, a news anchor for WIPU in Pennsylvania, has been ruled a suicide. She was only 42 years old. Matson was a well-known and respected journalist in the state, who hosted a four-hour nightly news show on WIPU. She also won the Outstanding Spot News Award twice during her successful career.
How and Why Did Emily Matson Commit Suicide?
According to the Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook, Matson jumped in front of a train in Fairview, Pennsylvania, around 12 miles from her home in Erie. Her injuries were consistent with the suicide by train theory, Cook said. Details about what type of injuries she sustained have not been revealed, but in most cases there is no chance of someone getting hit by a train and surviving, and Matson likely was aware of that.
The motive behind Matson’s suicide remains unclear, as no details about her personal life have been revealed to the public. She was married to her husband Ryan Matson, but their relationship status is unknown in terms of if they were going through something. Some people have speculated that her suicide may have been related to marital problems, but there is no evidence to support this claim.
Matson’s colleagues at WIPU expressed their shock and sadness over her death, and described her as a happy and passionate person who loved her job. They also praised her professionalism and integrity as a journalist.
The influence of media on suicide is a complex and controversial topic. Media professionals, such as actors, journalists, and writers, have a higher suicide rate than other occupations, according to a report by the World Health Organization (2014). The report stated that the suicide rate among media professionals was 20% higher than the average for all other occupations.
Moreover, media coverage of suicide, especially celebrity suicides, can have a negative impact on the public’s mental health and behavior, as some studies have shown that exposure to suicide stories in the media can trigger copycat suicides in the general population, especially by the same method as the celebrity. Therefore, it is important to raise awareness and provide support for media professionals, and the public who may be at risk of suicide or affected by suicide loss.
Matson’s funeral arrangements have not been announced yet.
