The human body is truly a remarkable creation. Although it seems so limited at times, there are also moments that make you realize how limitless our bodies can be when comes to creating new life. A perfect example is an African woman being dubbed “Decumom”.
How Did the South African Woman Give Birth to 10 Babies Unknowingly?
37 year old Gosiame Thamara Sithole is a South African woman who gave birth to 10 babies, but she had no idea it would happen. During her pregnancy she was told by doctors she would be having 8 kids, which is still a miraculous blessing. It was only after a C-section that doctors realized she had 10 babies inside her womb ready to emerge and experience life, three girls and seven boys.
In the moment doctors discovered the 10 babies inside her body, Gosiame Sithole became the first known “decumom” in human history.
How Did Gosiame Thamara Sithole’s Decumom Pregnancy Happen?
While it currently can’t be explained with certainty how it happened, we can talk about the scientific factors that potentially could have played a part. One of the first factors that contributes to having a multiple pregnancy such as the “Decumom” is age. Women over 30 statically have a greater chance of have multiple babies at once, in this case the South African woman was in her late 30’s closing in on 40. Also if you have a relative that had a multiple pregnancy that raises your chances statistically as well.
If the multiple babies being born are identical it means a single egg was fertilized then split into multiple copies in later development stage, almost like it cloned itself. If the babies are only fraternal it means separate eggs got fertilized by different specimens from the fluids of the man. In a situation where someone is having 10 babies at once, it’s possible to have both identical and fraternal twins at the same time.
Hopefully Gosiame Thamara Sithole has enough cribs at home to accommodate the new additions to their family. She has a basketball team of kids now. Luckily for her a National Baby Shower is trying to be put in place by former prominent politician Lindiwe Mazibuko.
