Derrick White, the star guard of the Boston Celtics, showed up to the team’s media day on Monday with a new look: a shaved head. White, who had been known for his receding hairline and headband, said he decided to go bald a few weeks ago, and claim the decision didn’t have anything to do with his hairline becoming a trending topic on social media. However, given the timing, some people think he’s bluffing.
White’s hairline was mercilessly roasted by NBA legends Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal on TNT’s Inside the NBA show, after the Celtics’ Game 2 win over the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the playoffs. Barkley and O’Neal compared White to ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith, who also has a notorious hairline. The clip of their jokes went viral, and many fans urged White to shave his hair.
White said he was not offended by the roast, and that he had planned to shave his hair anyway. He said he wanted to give the fans what they wanted, and that he was happy with his new look.
Is Derrick White Paying Homage to Michael Jordan?
White averaged 12 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds per game last season. He helped the Celtics finish with the second best record in the East, and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
With his new hairless look, Derrick White will no longer have to worry about wearing a headband or hiding his hairline. He seems ready to channel his inner Michael Jordan this season, and be legendary in his role.
