With the hire of Chauncey Billups as Portland’s next coach, Damian Lillard has been thrown into the fire of a major controversy. Due to people thinking that superstar players must cosign a coaching hire before it becomes official, people are now accusing Damian Lillard of supporting a rapist in Chauncey Billups. However, Lillard doesn’t see it that way, because he claims he wasn’t aware of the Billups’ sketchy past.
The sexual assault allegation refers to an incident that took place in November of 1997 when he was a member of the Boston Celtics. Chauncey Billups claims the victim performed consensual oral on him inside his car. However, she claimed that Chauncey Billups took her to a room and performed unwanted sexual acts on her along with his teammate Mercer. The victim was confirmed to have injuries to throat, rectum, and cervix upon examination at a Boston hospital.
On social media Damian Lillard responded to a fans accusing him supporting a rapist in Chauncey Billups, with some very honest details about his meetings with Blazers staff prior to the hire.
Damian Lillard has a valid argument, because like he said he was a small 7 year old when this news was circulating the sports airwaves. There weren’t many people who knew about Chauncey Billups’ rape case until it was brought back up in recent days. It was swept under the rug for the most part, even when he was working for ESPN.
On the flipside the fans coming at him make good points too, since the news of Billups’ sexual assault case started circulating before he was hired as Blazers coach. Was Lillard really completely unaware? It’s definitely possible, but easy to see why people think he knew.
One thing that’s for sure is that Blazers staff had to be aware, so they must really think Chauncey Billups is innocent like he claimed way back then.
