Howard University is known as one of the richest HBCUs in the nation. Despite this fact students have been protesting the poor living conditions they have been subjected to, which have damaged their health, belongings, and livelihood. The movement has been dubbed the “Blackburn Takeover”, after students staged a protest in front Howard’s Blackburn University Center.

When you walk by Blackburn University Center you will see Howard University students sleeping on concrete inside tents. Some people have likened it to a “homeless encampment”.
One student named Chandler Robinson described how Howard University students are in hospitals coughing up blood, are out of homes, and have lost all their belongings to mold damage or exposure. She also claims Howard University students didn’t have Internet access Wi-Fi for almost a month, which caused her to fall five weeks behind in all her classes.

People were very upset that Howard University was tweeting like nothing was going on with their students getting sick from mold exposure.

The average cost of tuition at Howard University for an undergraduate student is $28,000. In addition housing costs $9,300, and a meal plan is another $5,378. In total a Howard University student is possibly paying almost $50K per year to attend the private school.
Imagine paying that much money only to live in a dorm that has a mold and rat infestation. Hopefully these Howard University students coughing up blood in the hospital from mold exposure, and those who lost belongings are financially compensated.
