The Golden State Warriors have been one of the most dominant teams in the NBA for the past decade, thanks to the stellar performances of their star players, especially Stephen Curry. The two-time MVP and six-time All-Star is widely regarded as one of the best shooters and playmakers in the history of the game, and has led the Warriors to three championships and five finals appearances.
Did Steve Kerr Subliminally Say Steph Curry is Not a Leader?
Some people are questioning Curry’s leadership skills after a recent comment by his coach, Steve Kerr. In an interview on 95.7 The Game, Kerr was asked about the fit of Chris Paul, the veteran point guard who joined the Warriors in the offseason. Paul is a 10-time All-Star and a nine-time All-Defensive team member, who has been praised for his basketball IQ and leadership abilities.
Kerr said, “He’s the perfect fit for us right now. Frankly, I think we needed leadership. I think we needed a guiding force for this group”.
This remark raised some eyebrows among fans and analysts, who wondered why Kerr thinks that the Warriors needed leadership and a guiding voice when they already have Curry, who is supposed to be those things considering he’s now almost 36 years old.
Some people interpreted Kerr’s comment as an admission that Curry is not a leader, or at least not a good enough one for the current Warriors roster. They pointed out that Curry has often been criticized for being too passive or deferential on the court, especially in clutch situations. They also noted that Curry has not been able to carry the Warriors to the playoffs in the past, when he was without his fellow stars Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant due to injuries.
Others defended Curry and argued that Kerr’s comment was not a slight against him, but rather a compliment to Paul. They said that Paul is a different type of leader than Curry, who is more vocal and assertive on both ends of the floor. They also said that Paul’s presence does not diminish Curry’s role or impact on the team, but rather enhances it by allowing him to focus more on scoring and playing off the ball.
Regardless of how Kerr’s comment was meant or received, it has sparked a debate about Curry’s leadership qualities and how they compare to those of Paul and other elite point guards in the league. It remains to be seen how this dynamic will play out on the court, as the Warriors aim to return to contention in the 2023-24 season.
